A Bit of Beauty
Computer hardware, stark offices, filing cabinets -- your workspace may
be neat and organized and you may be efficient and productive, but are
you producing the best results? I would say no, if the place
where you work lacks a bit of beauty. We are creative beings, and
our enjoyment of lovely things can be tracked from infancy. Why
do babies prefer a smiling face to one with no expression? Why do
manufacturers produce children’s items in bold, bright colors, whether
in pinks and purples or blues and reds? Why are the boxes of
sugary cereals covered with loveable characters? Because children
are attracted to beauty, and that attraction doesn’t disappear with age.
What are some ways we can put beauty into our day, when we have to
spend hours in front of the computer typing up a report due at
5:00? Download a screensaver of butterflies or ocean life, put a
photo of your family on your desk in a gold frame, take an
inspirational quote typed in bright letters and tape it above the
computer. Instead of a plain black coffee mug, find one that
shows off a scene you like. Find a small vase and place a
carnation in it.
Try it for the drive home, too. Place a CD of your favorite
classical music in the CD player. Set the table with nice dishes
instead of paper plates. Light a candle and place it near the
sink as you clean up after supper.
Spending the afternoon with the children? Teach them to find
beauty, too. Have them take a break from homework and go on a
walk together. Look at the intricate veins on a leaf, the cluster
of tiny flowers that make up the center of a daisy, the puffy
white clouds that move through the bright blue sky. The beauty of
life is everywhere, though sometimes in our busyness, we have to seek
it out.
