A Dog Groomer and A Macintosh Fan
What do a dog groomer and a Macintosh fan have in common? To me,
they represent people with two different areas of expertise I know
little about. The Macintosh fan came to my house with my niece
for a visit. While we were engaging in the awkward preliminary
small talk that goes on when you first meet someone, I spied the Mac
laptop he was holding and laughed about how my niece had converted him
from PC’s. Yes, he told me, and then he proceeded to tell me why,
informing me of the characteristics of the Mac computers that I never
knew. I learned something new that day from this young man.
A few days later I talked with a woman I had previously met in passing
at a special skate day at the local roller skating rink. I found
out in that conversation that she was a part-time dog groomer, and
since I have a hairy friend of my own with some furry problems, I asked
her for advice. What a treat to meet someone who, because of her
own experience, could educate me in how to better care for my
dog.
In both instances, I came away with new information, and I felt wiser
because of it. I know I am wiser, not just because I learned
something, but because I was smart enough to listen.
