Are You Flexible (A Diva Or Do You Go With The Flow?)
Being flexible is not for your muscles and joints only, we all hear
about divas in the celebrity world and how they have to have certain
things just so or they will throw a fit (I heard of one rock group that
only wanted red m&ms in their room!). But how about having one of
those diva types for a boss? I have come across bosses that are just
like that. But in today’s busy business world, how good is it to be
rigid and only follow one set of rules?
Being flexible means being able to respond favourably to change or
in the very least being adaptable to it. And because most small
business owners need to be ready for practically anything, flexibility
is the name of the game. Sometimes the best ideas for approaching
something IS when we are flexible aka ‘thinking outside of the box’.
Also flexibility has to do with being a perfectionist. While the
boss I spoke about earlier, wasn’t a perfectionist in any way, she was
still a diva in the sense it was her way or the highway. However,
perfectionism can sometimes equal rigidity which doesn’t make for an
easy life. What are the links between flexibility and creativity?
Most companies today want a ‘flexible worker’ which is someone who
if handed a large project on Friday night a 4:00 won’t freak out. How
about you as a manager, are you flexible? Do you take things in
stride? Are you tough but fair? Is it your way all the time or are you
willing to take suggestions from staffers? How about change? Do you
embrace it easily or do you find it hard to change? How about the
atmosphere you create at work, is it fun or very serious? How about how
you handle a crisis? These are things to think about in your role as
boss as to your flexibility.
Besides being a buzzword of this new century in the business world, I think flexibility is a useful tool in anyone’s arsenal.
