Home based Businesswomen in Oregon
For many independent business women,
being home based works out just fine. However, there’s lots of
Pacific NW women who love working for themselves, but hate working at
home.
The reasons are numerous. For one, if you have a family, it’s
tough to maintain a boundary between home and office. Whether
it’s kids pleading for a snack, spouse asking “Where’s the checkbook?”,
or you eyeing the laundry hamper, distractions abound. At the
opposite end of the spectrum, there are Pacific NW women business
owners who don’t have family around their workspace, but find that
home-based self-employment can result in a long, lonely day.
Then there’s the sexism issue. Folks often treat home based women
business owners like they’re “playing work” (the adult version of
playing house) and that it’s not a “real” job. Getting a “real”
office raises the respect level tremendously. If you’re thinking about
getting your own office space, first, educate yourself. Since there are
many different options and terms available, become familiar with them
to get the right space for your needs. In addition to lease types
and terms, you’ll also want to consider issues like location, commute,
parking, aesthetics, accessibility, wiring for technology, light in
office, smell, neighbors (better to be surrounded by complimentary
businesses), etc.
A great place to start your research is the Small Business
Administration; there is a detailed article posted on their website at
<www.onlinewbc.gov/docs/finance/lease_ofc.html>.
While it’s not specifically targeting the Pacific NW, the information
is relevant to any home based woman business owner who’s thinking about
a change of scene.
Currently it's a renters market in the Pacific NW, so office space is
easy to come by. And if you end up in the perfect space, who
knows? You might never want to go home!
