Networking for Women

Did you know if you google the word “networking” you get about 144 million hits? If you narrow the criteria to include “Oregon”, it lessens to 2,910,000, but that’s still a big number.  And of course, that includes technical networking, but  a lot of those links are also about the kind of networking that many independent business women thrive on: the build-your-business type of networking.

I enjoy networking, because I enjoy meeting new people and starting new relationships.  That’s what networking is really about--building relationships, a skill that many women possess innately.  By far, I’ve found most of my clients through networking with other Oregon- and Washington-based independent business owners.  While you can go buy a stack of books to guide you into successfully “working” networking events, it boils down to two simple concepts:

1.  You’re starting a relationship, not a one-night stand, and
2.  You need to give in order to get.

Those who attend networking events with the mindset that it’s successful only if they land a client on the spot will be disappointed.  Oregon certainly doesn’t do business that way.  Follow-up is the key to successful networking.  Either immediately after the event, or the next day, enter the contact information for that woman you met (you know, the one who owns her own independent accounting business) and send her a brief note.  Or email.  Or call.  Whatever style is appropriate for you and your business.   Then touch base, as appropriate, a few months later.  And a few months after that.  And a few months after that.

Get it?

The other important point to remember is that any successful relationship is two-way.  Maybe you already have a good accountant, but maybe your friend needs one.  Provide referrals for the people you meet.  Even if your referrals don’t work out, your efforts will probably be appreciated, and the other person will probably return the favor.

Here’s how much I believe in networking: DivaDirectories will be offering quarterly events where women can get to know one another and practice their networking skills. Stay tuned for more details!

Our first event is scheduled at the Melody Ballroom for October 20, 2005. It will feature live music, fashion fun, catered eats, and more. Mark your calendar!!!
