Stars: Respite and Renewal
Tonight I went outside with my children, laid in the grass, and stared
at the stars. Between us all, we saw about five shooting
stars. I almost didn’t see any.
When my son called to me to go with him, my husband was using our home
phone and I was trying to call a neighbor on the cell phone. My
neighbor’s line was busy, so I didn’t put it the phone down before I
went outside. My son was commenting on the stars, and I dialed my
neighbor again. As I held the phone to my ear, hearing that
line was still busy, my little boy said, “You’re on the phone now?”
How keen his sense of timing is, and how confused mine has
become. There’s a time and place for everything; the time
to conduct business is not during the time for appreciating life.
We want our children to learn to work hard and achieve; they want us to
learn to relax and play.
Each of us needs a time of renewal from the heavy loads of
responsibilities we carry. If you are like me, you find it hard
to pull yourself away from the tasks at hand to have some fun.
Even a dinner out is spent discussing what needs to be done about this
and how to take care of that. It seems as if something is always
looming -- there’s always more to do. It’s during times such as
these that we need to put the cell phones away, go outside, and look at
the stars.
