Stress and the Busy Business Woman
Stress is something that affects almost everyone throughout the year
at some points, but I am sure that most will agree with me that this
time of year seems to be one of the worst for stress. Besides our
regular duties, we find that we have a ton of other things to do before, during and just after the holiday season.
Of course, there is such a thing as positive stress. It can compel
us to do things. It can institute the ‘flight or fight’ mechanism,
excitement and anticipation to our lives as well, but negative stress
(as we all know) can do a number on our bodies. Negative stress can
cause a variety of symptoms from headaches to lack of sleep to stomach
issues.
Totally eliminating stress is pretty much next to impossible in most
anyone’s life. However, if you identify where your stresses are coming
from (a co-worker or your mother) and learn coping mechanisms when
dealing with them. Secondly, know what you can change. Can you take a
different lunch period than that co-worker? Thirdly, take care of
yourself both physically and emotionally. If you are at the top of your
game in both these areas, chances are that you are able to deal with
stress that much more effectively. And lastly, develop some sounding
boards (in the form of family members or close friends); be kind to
yourself (be a friend to you!) Also, this has to do with being
realistic – realize there are going to be disappointments, frustrations
and failures in life. Learn how to deal with them. But most of all,
during this holiday season, remember to have fun, find time to relax
and enjoy it.
A recent stressor in my life was our move to Naples, Florida. Relocating my entire family and marketing agency from Portland, Oregon to Naples took it's toll on me. Then I got involved in acting classes at the Naples Players, a Community Theatre located on 5th avenue in Old Naples. Wow! What a difference it made to take out a little time for me. Taking a break from my daily life enabled me to put things in perspective, and approach everything with a fresh attitude.
Now I'm pleased with our move to Naples, and my marketing agency is thriving. We not only have Branding, Web Development and Consutling clients in Naples and Portland, Oregon, we also have web design, copy writing and online marketing clients and prospects in cities throughout California, Washington, Virginia, and Michigan.
