The Tongue is Mightier Than the Sword
Words can stimulate, move us, bring us to tears, thrill us, well
they can do just about everything to the human condition. How many
times have we said something than regretted it?
There is an analogy that we have used on our kids, that kinda makes you go hmmmm and it has to do with words.
First you take a tube of toothpaste, get a paper plate then squeeze
some of the toothpaste out onto the plate then tell the kids they have
to put it back into the tube. Seems like an impossible task,
right? Well the same is with the words that we speak, once they are out
of our mouth, we can’t take them back.
This exercise is to get kids to think a little bit before they speak
– if they are tempted to say something nasty or give a snide remark to
someone, it helps them to stop, think of the other person’s feelings
and then say it or not (depending on what they were going to say)
It is a thought provoking (but fun) experiment that is pertinent for
kids, but also good for adults to heed. If we all would think before we
speak, the world might be a friendlier place.
