When Is It Time To Quit
Do you dread getting up in the morning? Do you get physically sick
on Sunday evenings at the thought of going to work the next day? Do
stress out after a day at work and then proceed to get mad and upset
with your family when you are at home at night? Perhaps it is time to
start looking for a new job.
Begin by determining if this field is the one that you want to stay in. Decide if a career switch is in order.
Once you have decided that you want to stay in your current field
then start by fixing up your resume. You can either go to a
professional resume service or find a head hunter that will take you
under their wing (usually for a fee) but make sure you thoroughly check
out the business before handing over your cash. Look into their past,
their track record with other job seekers and their turnaround
time. Resumes are the only thing that your perspective employer has
about you and it may be your only opportunity to sell yourself to a
perspective employer.
Decide how much time you want to devote to a commute. If you look
for a job in the next large city besides yours, take into account the
commute as well as the rush hour traffic.
Network, network, network! Don’t be afraid of telling people that
you are looking for a job. I heard about one lady that told pretty much
everyone that she was looking. In fact, she was riding the elevator in
her apartment building, told the person that was in there with her and
it turned out that the other person owned a business, was looking to
hire someone and invited her to come in for an interview! (Supposedly
that is a true story!)
Be prepared to work, I have heard it said that looking for a new job is a job in itself.
Also be ready to answer some tough questions. Ones like ‘why
are you leaving your present employment?’ are bound to be asked.
Be equipped for some rejection. We all tend to get a little
sensitive when confronted with rejection, but learn to develop a thick
skin while job hunting as rejection is a normal happening while job
hunting. After all, you are not going to be a perfect fit for every job
that is out there, even if it may be in your field.
Good luck with the job hunt and if you are passionate about getting
a new job and try not to get discouraged, you should be able to get a
new one in no time.
