Recently I received an engaging resume from a prospective employee.
In the resume the applicant spoke of the time that she took away from
paid work as a ‘parenting sabbatical’. I thought that was clever, so I
gave her a call. In our conversation she expressed the following:
In the 70s women worked hard to gain equal rights in the
corporate world. They broke down barriers and paved new ways for women
to join the work force and become ‘equals’ to men. What these women did
for society was great. Now that the doors have been opened it’s time
for women of this generation to take it a step further. Instead of
playing by the rules delineated by a male dominated corporate world,
women should join together to redefine the rules of work. As vital
members of the work force, women of today’s generation have the
opportunity to redefine how women work. More flexible work schedules,
kid friendly office environments, and job sharing are just a few of the
ways that progressive professionals are redefining women’s roles in the
corporate world.
I would like to hear from you readers. What ideas do you have
to redefine women’s roles in the workplace? What would you change to
create a more productive, family centered working environment? Respond
