At one time or another, most people toy with the idea of working from home – or at least, wish that they could. With the number of home businesses booming today, the trend is toward working for an unseen entity that doles out work assignments via the internet. Though this may make the more skeptical among us raise a wary eyebrow, it can actually be quite lucrative – if you’ve done your homework before jumping, feet first, into the world of internet marketing.
The average citizen is savvy enough to know that there are a lot of internet marketing opportunities that are – in plain English – a rip-off. However, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the case with every company. There are some well established companies that offer a stable history, good reputation and a great deal of integrity when it comes to making internet marketing opportunities available to others using online technologies. It may take some time to ferret out the unsavory ones, but by applying yourself to doing some solid research regarding these companies, you’re sure to find the ones that are more honorable.
Though a number of internet marketing positions involve working for someone else, at least as many of them are set up so that you are the owner of the business. Rather than reporting to a supervisor, you’ll be your own boss – a dream come true, for most people. But, just as with everything else, there are some downfalls which are intrinsic to this type of arrangement. For instance, in order to realize a good cash flow, you’ll need to stay motivated and work on a regular basis, just as you would if you were going to a
9 to 5
job in a brick and mortar environment. This isn’t always easy, because we can get too relaxed and put things off until another time or simply get too distracted because our environment isn’t conducive to handling business from home. Of course, there will most likely be additional expenses that you’ll have to pay out of your own pocket in such a scenario, since you’re the business owner and all business-related expenses are your personal responsibility.
If you’re a self-starter and are willing and able to take on expenditures that may crop up, then you can start by developing a list of companies to research. At this point, most of you are probably thinking, “Sure, but where do I start?” That isn’t as difficult as it may sound. Start by asking yourself what type of products you’re planning to sell. There are as many of those as there are grains of sand on the beach. Suppose, for instance, you decided to sell cosmetics. You would begin by searching for companies that were offering marketing opportunities for that type of commodity. If, on the other hand, you’re most interested in marketing power tools, software, lingerie or children’s toys, then you would search for companies that handled one of those types of products.
You must also ask yourself if you’d be comfortable in a sales position, because that’s really what this is all about. In order to market a product, you need to be comfortable in a sales arena and possess some level of skills in the area of selling. If you were called upon to solicit business over the telephone at this very moment, would you feel comfortable enough to do so? What if you were to solicit business from a friend or loved one – would you be able to do that without being uncomfortable? If the answer is “yes” to these questions, then you’d probably do fairly well in an internet marketing position. Otherwise, you’re not going to be successful. You can’t sell a product if you’re uncomfortable talking to people about it – much less be convincing enough to draw them in for a purchase.
After you’ve found a list of businesses to be researched, go over each one very carefully. Look at things such as their track record, length of operation, overall reputation and whether or not they’re a member of the Better Business Bureau. If any of these factors are questionable, then it’s probably best to go on to the next company. Of course, if this is a ground-floor scenario, then the company won’t have much of a history to offer and you’ll have to make the decision as to whether or not you’re willing to take the risk of joining a fledgling business. Naturally, one of the things that will also be important is whether or not the company will provide the necessary training and materials in order for you to get started with your home business. If you happen to have the opportunity to speak with others who may have worked with a particular company that you’re researching, be sure to ask specific questions that will address your concerns.
Once you’ve accumulated all of the information and are comfortable enough with your knowledge base to make an informed decision, then choose a company to work with, keeping in mind that it won’t be easy. Working from home is every bit as challenging as working offsite – sometimes more so, since the interruptions are numerous! Anyone who’s willing to commit the time and effort to take on this type of business can succeed, provided they’ve done their homework and chosen well. An internet marketing business can be a wonderful thing, as long as it’s a good match for you and you’ve found the right company with which to work.
One excellent example of a marketing firm that does much of its business through the internet is DivaDesignWorld of Portland, Oregon. As a result of good leadership and a dedicated staff, this company has become well established and quite successful in a fairly short amount of time. As “Head Diva” of DivaDesignWorld I am a go-getter and has worked hard to make my business successful. As a result of my dedication – and good judgment in choosing qualified staff members – DivaDesignWorld has taken off...and you will, too, if you’re willing to work hard.
