How To Have A Debt Free Christmas PDF Print E-mail

How To Have A Debt Free Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner. Does the thought of Christmas make you shake with fear? Have you started shopping yet? Are you still paying off bills from last year? Here in the US, studies show that it will take an average of 4 months to pay off debts incurred at Christmas.

Christmas is a beloved time of year for most. Children look forward to the many gifts they will be getting and parents enjoy (sometimes) spending time with friends and relatives that they don’t see all that often. But when it comes to gift giving, that’s where the trouble can start.

Start off this shopping season by setting a budget and sticking with it. One idea could be to only carry the money that you are willing to spend on that particular person with you. Try to avoid using credit for any purchase. (Most times it is easier said than done!)

Another important factor to consider might be to limit expectations. Allow your child to write a list or a letter to Santa, but then only get them a few special gifts. The real meaning of the season is to give. Allow your children to make presents for loved ones or take them shopping with you. Also you might want to set limits on the amount of money that can be spent for each person. The less money, the more creative you have to be ☺ which can be a lot of fun too. Or you could try with extended families only buying for kids, not the adults.

You also might want to go as a family to volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter which will show you all just how fortunate you are. As for next Christmas, you might want to start thinking of it following this Christmas when everything is on sale. Also, buy throughout the year, if you see something that would be great for someone on your shopping list, why not buy it then and there?

My wish to you is that you will have a happy and healthy Christmas and one that is not dominated by ‘things’, but by the true meanings of Christmas, such as love, hope, courage, strength and joy.

Are You A Good Listener? PDF Print E-mail

Are You A Good Listener?

Everyone gets instructions, hears important information or just listens to friends when they speak every day, but are you a good listener? We have all heard of stories that feature the male of the species who is reading the paper or watching TV while someone is talking to them, but when asked them a question about what you said 5 minutes earlier, they have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

With listening comes recall, they go hand in hand. If you are asked to attend a seminar, how much information do you come away with? Yes, as with most seminars, it is usually a case of information over load, but with that being the case maybe you scribble down some notes, but really, how good a listener are you?

Many people take for granted this important area of communication. There are a few rules of good communication that you may want to follow. Firstly you want to make eye contact with the person that is speaking. Secondly, another very important item in the art of listening is to stop talking. It rather hard to hear someone say something if you are talking! Following that, it is important to ask questions if you don’t understand what is being said. That is the simplest way to clarify and to grasp what is being said. You should also pay close attention to what is being said and try not to interrupt. Concentrate on the main points that are being explained, not the abstract.

Follow these few simple rules and you will be a very good listener. You will glean the information needed and also, people will enjoy talking to you!

Before You Buy – A New Computer PDF Print E-mail

Before You Buy – A New Computer

So you are looking to purchase a new computer and maybe you don’t know much about them. How can you get what you want on your new pc with out much hassle and without having to be a computer wizard?

Do your research first. What do you need in a computer? Big Box stores can offer you good deals on computers and some assistance as well (usually for a cost), but if you don’t know much about computers, this may be the route to take. Money, of course will be your determining factor on what kind of computer you get. Expect to pay anywhere from $800 to about $1500 for a basic type of system and higher for a more advanced one.

Some things you may want to look into though are things like what kind of technical support do they offer? Can you get a hold of them 24/7 if need be? By checking out some computer magazines, you may be able to see ratings on each particular company if not each computer you are looking at.

Of course, you will want to consider the nitty grittys of computers, things such as memory, hard drive and processors. Don’t be afraid to talk to the experts that the big box stores have on staff. Tell them your needs and ask them what is best for you. If in doubt, talk to friends or family members that have computer knowledge or take them with you even when you go to purchase your computer.

But mostly, empower yourself. DO your research and homework. Knowledge takes the fear out of the purchase and you will get the computer that you and your company needs.

Writing A Letter Of Recommendation PDF Print E-mail

Writing A Letter Of Recommendation

A staff member or a co-worker has come to you and asked you and asked you for a letter of recommendation. What should you put in that letter and what shouldn’t you put into it in order to make the letter an effective tool for the person who is asking for it?

A letter of recommendation can be an important tool in job hunting and when writing it, it doesn’t have to be a long drawn out letter; it just should have a few of the following items in it

Start out with ‘to whom it may concern’ and the days date. Mention what position they had and the salary they were making (if wanted). What was your relationship to the person the letter is for? Where you their boss or their co-worker? How long have you known the person? You will want to mention these key factors that the reader should know about the person whom you are writing the letter for.

Concentrate of different traits of the person. Were they punctual? A good people person? Specifically outline their traits as well as their contributions to your organization. Use descriptive words such as independent worker, high energy level, organized, a self starter, etc. Try to avoid using adjectives like satisfactory, decent, nice, fair, etc.

Towards the end of the letter you may want to add a personal endorsement of the person, something along the lines of “it was a pleasure working with this person because I knew I could always count on them” or “If the opportunity arose, I would not hesitate to hire this person again because of the dedication they had to the job”, or that they were a team player etc.

You will want to close the letter of with sincerely, faithfully or something similar and don’t forget to put your name, title and any contact information you may have so if the person reading this has any questions they can contact you.

If you are still stuck as to what to write, take a few minutes to search the Internet. On there, you will be able to find several sample letters and while you won’t be able to quote them word for word, it will give you a basic idea of what’s needed for a great reference letter.

Staying Current PDF Print E-mail

Staying Current

With our fast paced, ever changing world, business is not sheltered for growth and changes so how can you stay current and grow right along in your chosen profession? Dinosaur thinking just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Of course, staying current and up to date could include returning to school, taking some night school courses. Just about every college and university offers some sort of night school course. Check into the one near you.

The Internet is a good way of getting information that pertains to your career or job. It is easy to access and always available, but don’t use it as a sole source of information.

Networking is an important part of staying current also. Trade shows, clubs, discussion groups can all be beneficial to meeting people that share the same business interests as you.

Read, read, read. Chances are there is a publication on your field. Take time to seek it out. Visit the library often (most large libraries get many different print magazines on a variety of topics.) It is will require some work to stay on top of your chosen profession, but it is not an impossible and with a little ‘elbow grease’ it can be done.
