Stains PDF Print E-mail

Stains

Rats, my son has just spilled grape juice on his nice white shirt. Though not brand new, it was fairly new and one of the nicer shirts he had. Of course, kids tend not to be as careful as adults with their clothes (no surprise there), but even the best of us spill things on clothes and on carpets too. Accidents can happen to best of us.

Stains, they are an unavoidable part of life on any given day, but how can you get rid of them? First, it depends on what they are as to how they are treated.

Around the house - candle wax, crayon wax and chewing gum can be removed the same way and that is by scraping away as much as possible with a dull knife, then placing the article on which the stain is into the freezer or using an ice pack on the area (if it is say, a carpet). With the stain hard, it is easier to scrape off some of the debris and then wash it. Most stains on carpets can be removed with a mixture of white vinegar and water.

Fabrics - hairspray can remove most ink stains from fabrics. A mix of hydrogen peroxide and water will get blood out of clothes, baby wipes will take lipstick off of most clothes. Most protien stains will come out by just soaking them in water. Protein stains include white glue, mucas, vomit, ice cream, urine, and pudding to name a few.

Kitchen - to get rid of stains at the bottom of your ceramic tea pot, put a denture cleaning tablet into the pot, fill it with water, let it sit over night and wash it as usual the next day.

You can get a stain chart online for just about everything by going to www.howtocleananything.com and armed with this information, you will be able to get rid of just about any stain known to man!

What Great Managers Do PDF Print E-mail

What Great Managers Do

What does it take to make a great manager? Being a great manager requires being a great leader, you must be a good listener and a good organizer, but what else is needed?

-Sets a good example for their employees, they set clear expectations and goals for their staff.

-Cares about their staff and sees them as individuals, not just cogs in a machine. Empathy comes into play here.

-Offers staff opportunities to learn and grow

-Is a good motivator to staff

-Is good at communication. This is the key to good management (not to mention knowing your audience.

But what about you as a person, what does it take in a personality to make a great manager? What qualities can you have that will benefit your staff and make them want to come to work on a daily basis and put forth their best effort?

-you should have confidence in yourself as a person and as a worker – confident that you are able to get the job done.

-you are somewhat of an extrovert, while you don’t have to be ‘the life of the party type’, it is good to be a little bit outgoing. Being a manager involves being a ‘people person’.

-you are honest because the success of your department or area that you are managing lies heavily on trust. The trust of your employees in you as a manager and your trust in them, that will do the task at hand.

-you are consistent in your dealing with your employees, but necessarily rigid.

-you are innovative – you are willing to think outside of the box, you are willing to take risks and don’t apologize when and if they fail.

Remember, almost anyone can be a manager, but it takes a lot of work to become a great one!

Tips for Naming Your Business PDF Print E-mail

Tips for Naming Your Business

Naming your business is like naming a child. It is a name that will stick with it the whole entire lifetime of the business. So what are some factors that need to be looked at when naming a business? I heard on one company that named their business something that started with the letter ‘A’ because they wanted it to be close to the beginning of the phone book.

But seriously, what is in a name? Think of the parents that call their daughter Carrie. Nice name you say, and yes, it is. But what if there last name is Okey? Then her name would be Carrie Okey… Business owners should put as much thought into naming their business as they did coming up with their idea. Some professionals believe that the business name should suggest something of your business, while others believe that it should be more abstract. Others believe that more abstract names, like made up ones are the best, because they are easier to remember.

How about hiring a professional? You hire an accountant to do your books, why not hire a name consultant to help you name your business? The upside of hiring a professional to carry out this task is that they have experience in this field and will name your business appropriately. The downside of this, however is that it can cost big bucks. If you are a small-business owner, you will probably take on the responsibility of naming your business yourself. Here are a few ideas that may help you in that endeavour.

-don’t make it territorial. If your business is called Pittsburgh Clothing Company, what if it diversifies and you decide to go national, what is relevant in the colder climates might not be in say, California.

-don’t be specific. If there was a business called Chrissies’ Crepes, could it also sell donuts? Would it be known for selling donuts? No, probably not.

-define what qualities you want to be identified with. Something like ‘The Country Vegetarian” for a restaurant would portray fresh country vegetables to the hungry person looking for a restaurant.

-research, brainstorm, look at magazines, dictionaries etc. Professional ‘namers’ come up with somewhere from 800 – 1,000 names before choosing one, so be prepared to spend some time doing this.

-go with your gut, do a test market or a focus group before naming it. Say the name out loud – imagine hearing it on radio or seeing it in the print media, does it portray what you want to come across?

Naming a business can be tricky, but by doing some research and giving it careful thought, you can come up with a winner that will be on everyone’s minds and lips for decades.

Career Switching PDF Print E-mail

Career Switching

You have worked a number of years in a current career and you find yourself growing weary of the commute, the rat race, or perhaps you are getting to the point that you are growing a bit more introspective and desire more for your life or perhaps you have come to a roadblock in your life or your career. No matter what your reasoning is, switching careers is definitely possible, but there are a few factors you should think about before taking that leap of faith and leaving that stable pay check.

-research, research, research – decide what field you are interested in, where you see your life in ten years, what strengths and past experiences you can draw from.

-think, think, think – think about if you are able to live on less monthly income than you are currently living on, if you are willing to re-locate, can you work from home (it takes a lot of self motivation to be able to work at home alone, as well you should not be one that requires a lot of interaction with other people since working from home is fairly solitary).

-plan, plan, plan – before you give up the comfort of your regular paycheck, especially if you are looking into starting your own business.

Also there are few does and don’ts that need to be followed: DO determine if your unhappiness with your current job stems from your career choice, not just an immediate situation. Do talk to a career counsellor and a job coach. Do assess your likes and dislikes. Do leverage some of your transferable skills into your new career. Skills like leadership, planning, can be carried over into any other profession. Do build and keep a network going

Don’t fail to plan for a switch by just quitting your job and hoping for the best – that seldom works. Don’t make a career change without the necessary education or experience. Don’t

It used to be that a business would try and lure away prospective employees from their current position, sure this might still happen but certainly not on the same scale that it did say 50 years ago. While it depends what field you are in of course, it is up to you to plan your life.
